The device (10) is for reading and writing data on magnetic strips and comprises a reading and writing unit (11) with at least two reading heads (13,14), each of which is connected to a control unit (15) which compares data read by the heads with each other. The total width of the reading heads is not greater than the width of the track on the magnet strip to be read. The total width of the reading heads is not greater than three millimeters, and can be equal to half a millimeter. The distance between the centers of the reading heads is equal to 1.5 millimeters. The control unit is connected with an alarm device (19). It gives no release to information if there is a difference between the read signals from the different reading heads. The device is intended as a replacement for existing reading and writing units.
