PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp serving as an automobile headlamp/an infrared night vision device, capable of satisfying conditions expected to be standardized for a mercury free automobile headlamp, and suitable for a light source for the infrared night vision device of a near infrared type, and to provide a metal halide lamp lighting device. PSOLUTION: This metal halide lamp MHL serving as the automobile headlamp/the infrared night vision device includes a fire-resistant and translucent airtight vessel 1, a pair of electrodes 1b, 1b, a first halide containing sodium (Na), scandium (Sc), and at least one kind of rare earth metals. a second halide having main emission in a near infrared region having wave lengths of 780-800 nm, and a gas having main emission in a near infrared region having wave lengths of 820-1,000 nm, and is equipped with a discharge medium filled in the airtight vessel 1 without essentially containing mercury.
