The method involves regulating speed of a motor vehicle on a given target speed during free driving using a distance-oriented speed control system, and regulating speed of the motor vehicle on the given target distance during a subsequent driving, where the target distance is reducible. The target distance is reduced during the subsequent driving to an ahead-driving vehicle during actuation of an accelerator pedal. The reduced target distance is given depending on an actual distance during loosening of the accelerator pedal.
