The device (1) has a distance detection device (3) e.g. radar- and laser distance sensor, detecting distance between a vehicle and an ahead-driving vehicle. A vehicle speed control device controls the distance by adjusting speed (V) of the vehicle based on the detected distance such that reference distance to the ahead-driving vehicle is held. The distance control device remains active up to stoppage of the vehicle behind the ahead-driving vehicle such that the distance control device performs distance- and/or speed control while restarting the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a motor vehicle.
