The device has an object detection sensor (3) attached at front side of a motor vehicle and a distance and/or a relative speed to a before-driving vehicle is determined. The speed (v1) is controlled depending on the distance and/or the relative speed. A signaling device (14) e.g. LED, provided at the vehicle outer side signals surrounding field, in particular the driver of the before-driving vehicle, that an adaptive distance and speed controller (1) is active, in particular the driving characteristics, preferably the distance to the before-driving vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for signaling the activity of an adaptive distance- and speed controller.
