The device (1) has a distance detecting device (3) for detecting a distance between a vehicle and an ahead-driving vehicle. A vehicle speed controlling device (2) controls an electric machine (7) during deceleration of a motor vehicle i.e. hybrid vehicle, such that the electric machine brakes upto a preset speed of the motor vehicle. A hydraulic brake assembly (6) is controlled by the vehicle speed controlling device such that a brake torque is applied exclusively by the hydraulic brake assembly during stopping of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a hybrid vehicle.
