The system has a target brake force detecting device for detecting target braking torque of a driver. The target brake force detecting device has a pedal stroke sensor (41), which detects a stroke of a brake pedal, and a hydraulic pressure sensor (42), which detects the hydraulic pressure of a main cylinder. A control unit (50) controls a drive motor using computation of maximum retrieval braking torque. The control unit controls hydraulic brake adjusting device in order to change the hydraulic braking torque to the target braking torque based on the computed maximum retrieval braking torque. An independent claim is also included for a control method for a brake system for a hybrid electric vehicle having petrol and diesel engines.
