The device has an extension element (100) guided in a housing (200) and performing a change of geometrical dimensions during a change of temperature induced due to overload, where a triggering mechanism of an electrical switch i.e. power switch, is activated for triggering the switch during the overload. The element is designed and arranged in such a manner that the element performs a change in length towards a longitudinal extension for activation of the mechanism during the change of temperature of the element. The element exhibits a spiral shape.
