The method involves providing position detecting devices (36a-36h) e.g. assisted global positioning system-position detection device, which determines an actual effective position. The devices have a transmitting device that transmits the position of the devices. The detection devices are attached to a lattice-boom extension arm (16), a jib boom (18) and a counter or derrick boom (20) of a crane and/or to a load (30) to be lifted by the crane. A reference position of the detection devices is determined. The reference position is compared with the effective position of the detection devices. An independent claim is also included for a system for operating a crane for lifting a load.
