The method involves coupling a trailer (2) to a coupling point (3) of a motor vehicle (1) in an articulated manner, and selecting driving moments for wheels (6, 7) of the trailer such that mass inertia forces of trailer mass are balanced with respect to the coupling point. The wheels are positioned at respective sides of a longitudinal axis (5) of the trailer. Wheel forces of the wheels are determined from force balance and moment balance, where the driving moments for the wheels are determined from the wheel forces. The moment balance is determined around a pivot point of the trailer.
