The method involves determining a relative position of a coupling point (5) of a towing vehicle (2) by a sensor system (3) to a coupling point (4) of a trailer (1). A trajectory (7) of the trailer is determined from data determined by the sensor system. Steering and driving function of the trailer is actuated by individual wheel drives (6) in such a manner that the towing vehicle is driven into a relative position, and manually or automatically coupled with the trailer. Signals of an imaging sensor are evaluated for determination of the trajectory. An independent claim is also included for a device for coupling a trailer with a towing vehicle.
