The method involves detecting distance and direction of a coupling point (21) to a towing device (3) of a motor vehicle (1) by a distance sensor (15), and representing the distance and the direction between the coupling point and the towing device for a driver on a monitor in a top view. The vehicle is moved to a coupling position along computing of a trajectory based on the distance and the direction. References are provided to the driver at necessary steering interventions and longitudinal guiding interventions to reach the coupling position.
