The present invention relates to a method for preparing chiral α-aminonitrile through a strecker reaction by using a cyanide source under a catalyst having Chemical Formula 1 or Chemical Formula 2 of ethylene glycol derivatives. According to the present invention, chiral α-aminonitriles having various structures and high stereoselectivity can be synthesized. In addition, (R)-type α-aminonitrile, which is a precursor of a synthetically obtainable amino acid, (R)-α-amino acid, can be synthesized to have high optical purity. As the cyanide source, an alkali metal cyanide having good thermal stability, good storing properties, low cost and easy-to-use properties can be used solely, or a combination of the alkali metal cyanide and an alkali metal sulfinate or sulfinic acid can be used.
