PURPOSE: A composition containing extracts and fractions of raw and steamed Codonopsis lanceolata is provided to enhance acetyl choline concentration in a brain and to effectively prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition or a functional food composition for preventing or treating dementia contains extracts and fractions of raw and steamed Codonopsis lanceolata. The extracts are prepared using 70% ethanol. The raw and steamed Codonopsis lanceolata helps neurotransmission of acetyl choline by suppressing acetyl choline esterase. A composition for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases contains 0.1-99 wt% of the extracts and fractions as active ingredients and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
