The present invention relates to an incubator (1), in particular gas incubator, with a of a housing (2) surrounding inner space (3) and an outside of the inner space (3) arranged steam generator (4), which, with the interior space (3) via a steam feed line (5) in communication. The steam generator (4) is in the form of a substantially unpressurized container (40) with a bottom area (41) and a superimposed steam chamber (42) is formed, wherein the bottom region (41) for receiving a water reservoir (6) and formed with a heating device (7) for heating of the water reservoir (6) is provided, the steam feed line (5) the steam generator (4) in the region of the vapor space (42) and an air supply line (8) into the steam generator (4) therein about the steam generator (4) to ambient air and air enriched with water vapour by means of the steam feed line (5) substantially without pressure into the interior space (3) of the incubator (1) to initiate. The present invention also relates to a method for operating such a incubator.
