The multi-stage press has two horizontally arranged forming tools (1) and a gripper for positioning a wire section in the forming tool, where each forming tool has a punch (2) and a die, particularly a vertical die (3). The vertical die is designed such that a vertical deformation of the preformed wire section that is positioned in the die, or a punching out of a section or portion from the wire section is caused by the associated horizontally acting punch. A wedge element is arranged in the vertical punch, which is moved over a ledge (221) arranged at the punch. An independent claim is included for a method for vertical forming of a forming portion or punching a cutout in the forming portion.
