PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for promoting carotenoid production of lactic acid bacteria and for giving lactic acid bacteria resistance to oxidation stress without recombination technology.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method for producing carotenoid, that comprises aerobic culture of a lactic acid bacterium having carotenoid biosynthesis genes including crtN gene and crtM gene. The invention also provides a method for producing a lactic acid bacterium having improved carotenoid productivity and resistance to oxidation stress, as well as anti-oxidation composition comprising the lactic acid bacterium. The anti-oxidation composition may be food and drink or medicine.
