The method involves determining transactions (T12-T1x, T22-T2x) and transaction parameters (P11-P1x, P21-P2x) based on a user expression (BE) for controlling background applications (HA1, HA2). The transactions are assigned to the transaction parameters. The transactions and the transaction parameters are associated with each other over a universal dialog specification (UDS). The specification is evaluated over a universal speech dialog system for determining the transaction and parameters for controlling the background applications. The applications are universally operated over the system. An independent claim is also included for a universal speech dialog system for controlling background applications.
