The method comprises: receiving (202) a first control message, which comprises at least one piece of running state information, from a second in-vehicle control unit of a second motor vehicle, ascertaining (204) a first time for an initiation of a reaction of the first motor vehicle on the basis of the first control message, selecting (206) the first time as a valid time, and ascertaining (208) a signal for initiating the reaction of the first motor vehicle at the time when, up to the valid time, no further control message is successfully received from the second in-vehicle control unit.
