A method for operating a first in-vehicle control unit (NN1) for a first motor vehicle (V1) in a group of motor vehicles is provided, wherein the method comprises: ascertaining a braking time (t1; t2) for a time-synchronised braking of at least some of the motor vehicles in the group, sending a message indicating the braking time (t1; t2) towards a second control unit (NN2) of a second motor vehicle, selecting the ascertained braking time (t1; t2) as a valid braking time, and initiating a braking of the first motor vehicle (V1) only at the time when the valid braking time (t1; t2) is reached.
