The Minister for Education wishes to refer to the question ofudalleged instances of child abuse and the procedures whichudshould be followed by national school authorities where it isudsuspected or alleged that such abuse may have occurred.ud2. Following discussions between the Department of Educationudand the organisations represenLing school management, parentsudand teachers, the guidelines contained in this document haveudbeen drawn up. The document contains procedures which areudintended ro assist school management authorities and teachersudin handling disclosures from children, by detailing the steps toudbe taken wher: dealing with such matters.udThe Minister urges school authorities and teachers toudadhere to the guidelines in dealing with allegations or suspicionsudof child abuse. The guidelines are now, of course, statutory inudnature and in the event of Court proceedings arising, each caseudwould fall to be judged on its own merits.
