AbstractBackground: In the recent years, there has been a major focus on sickness absence. Much of theresearch and debates have centered on the harmful aspects of the work. It has nevertheless been achange of focus to emphasize workers' presence and the health promoting aspects of work in recentyears. Yet, there`s still few studies that emphasize what promotes health in the workplace. Thepurpose of this study is to investigate factors that might be associated with long-term workpresence. Finding such positive factors, might be used to develop health-promoting workplaces.Method: The study is a quantitative cross-sectional study that used data from Friskgårdendatabank. It consists of data collected in all Friskgårder in Norway. Participants in the study areemployees of companies connected to FriskBedrift. FriskBedrift is an educational program givento companies with the aim of strengthening managers, employees and working environment in along-term presence perspective.Results: 1398 employees participated in the study, 75 % women and 25 % men. Of these, 24.1 %had long-term presence last 12 months. Men (28. 9 %) had slightly larger long-term presence thanwomen (22.5 %). There was generally little difference between the long-term presence group andabsence groups in relation to age, full- or part-time employment and education. Work environment,work engagement and SOC showed small but statistically significance in mean-scores related topresence and absence groups. Regression result showed that system-oriented work environment,work engagement, SOC and gender had significant influence on presence and absence. Theindependent variables explained only 6.8 % of the total variance in the presence and absence. Forwomen the model explained 6.2 %. System-oriented work environment, work engagement, SOCand education had significance. For men the model explained 8.9 %. Work engagement and fullor part-time employment had significance.Conclusion: The study concluded that work environment, work engagement and SOC had small,but statistically significant correlations with the long- term presence and sickness absence. SOC,work engagement, system-oriented work environment and education were associated with thepresence for women. Work engagement had the strongest correlation with men's presence.
