The report presents selected estimates of coverage, use of services, and healthcare expenses for persons covered by Medicaid during 1987. Data from the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey indicate that about 22 million Americans in the noninstitutionalized population, about 9.3 percent of this population, had Medicaid coverage for all or part of the year. Two-thirds had coverage throughout the year. The poor, the disabled, persons in families with no employed adult, and persons in single parent households were the most likely to have Medicaid coverage. Those with Medicaid coverage for only part of the year were less likely than those covered all year to have any expenses; and for part-year enrollees with expenses, a lower proportion was covered by Medicaid and a much higher proportion was paid by private insurance and out of pocket. Average total expenses per full-year Medicaid enrollee were $2,408. Expenses for all types of services increased with age and were higher for the disabled.
