Fuel Injection of a Medium Speed Diesel Engine, Spray Characterization

Fuel sprays of medium speed diesel engine were characterized at the ambienttemperature in a pressurized measurement chamber. This was done with a sparse test matrix. It was possible to detect some trends and the influence of some parameters. To discover the influence of individual parameters on the droplet size and spray characteristics, more work is needed. The Sauter mean diameter increased and the width of the size distribution decreased as the radial distance from the spray centerline increased. This was observed near the edges of the spray. The explanation for this might be that drag of the radial component of the high velocity spray induced wind draws the small droplets deeper into the spray. Correlations fitted to the measured data for penetration, spray angle and Sauter mean diameter at the edge of the spray were presented. The droplet size in the core of the spray could not be measured. The development of a tehnique to cut out part of the spray will be necessay to make measurements of the droplet size in the core by laser diffraction.
