Wind Load Data for Variable Message Signs. Structures and Materials ResearchReport

The purpose of this research was to accumulate wind load data for variablemessage signs. The interest was in measuring the dynamic characteristics of wind forces generated by passing trucks on overhead available message signs. The effect of raising the elevation of the signs was also studied. To accomplish this objective, specialized instrumentation was installed over an interstate highway. Variable reluctance pressure transducers and Pilot tubes were used for the instrumentation. Wind pressure measurements were recorded simultaneously for instruments mounted at 0 degrees, 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees, 75 degrees, and 90 degrees relative to the roadway surface. Pressure readings for each instrument were recorded at the rate of 714 readings per second.
