摘要

For more than 10 years, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry(ATSDR), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), has advocated a comprehensive approach to promoting the environmental health of sensitive populations such as our children. Recognizing children's unique susceptibility to toxicants in the environment, ATDR has strengthened its commitment to ensuring health children in a healthy environment. In April 1996, ATSDR implemented its Child Health Initiative. This initiative emphasizes the ongoing examination of relevant child health issues in all of ATSDR's programs and activities. Moreover, this initiative encourages the identification of new projects that may benefit children. An example is the development of the Pediatric Environmental Neurobehavioral Test Battery (PENTB), which will be used in environmental health studies of children. Furthermore, the Child Helath Initiative encourages the exchange of environmental child health information with other agencies and organizations.
