Student Work and Teacher Practices in Science: A Report on What Students Know and211 Can Do

In 1996 the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) assessed the211u001eknowledge and skills of students in the areas of earth science, life science, and 211u001ephysical science. It also collected information relating to the background of 211u001estudents (grades 4, 8, and 12), their teachers (grades 4 and 8), and the schools 211u001ethey attended (grades 4, 8, and 12). This report is intended primarily for 211u001eteachers; hence, the results presented relate directly to students' performance, 211u001eclassroom practices, and schools climate. The report also discusses students' 211u001eattitudes and beliefs about science.
