摘要

This paper uses the new Longitudinal Establishment and Enterprise Microdata211u001e(LEEM) at CES to investigate gross and net job flows for the U.S. economy. Much 211u001eof the previous work on U.S. job flows has been based on analysis of the 211u001eLongitudinal Research Database (LRD), which is limited to establishments in the 211u001emanufacturing sector. The LEEM is the first high-quality, nationwide, 211u001ecomprehensive database for both manufacturing and nonmanufacturing that is 211u001esuitable for measuring annual job flows. We utilize the LEEM data to measure 211u001erecent gross and net job flows for the entire U.S. economy. We then examine the 211u001erelationships between firm size, establishment size, and establishment age, and 211u001einvestigate differences resulting from use of two alternative methods for 211u001eclassification of job flows by size of firm and establishment. We find that gross 211u001ejob flow rates decline with age, and with increasing establishment size when 211u001econtrolling for age differences, whether initial size or mean size classification 211u001eis utilized. However, the relationship of net job growth to business size is very 211u001esensitive to the size classification method, even when data and all other 211u001emethodology are identical.
