摘要

The book analyses the importance of NATO enlargement on Russian foreign policy211u001erelative to other security factors, internal political factors and economic gain 211u001eetc. The first chapter by Oldberg on four stages of policy development finds that 211u001e'national interests' are increasingly stressed, but that actual policy has become 211u001emore realistic in all geographic directions, mainly due to economic constraints. 211u001eOldberg's second chapter on Russia's relations with new Western neighbours 211u001einvestigates to what extent NATO enlargement led to the growing dialogue with the 211u001eBaltic states, agreements with Ukraine, and integration with Belarus. Johan 211u001eNorberg detects few effects of NATO enlargement on Russia's Caucasian policy, 211u001esince Russian involvement diminished in the region. The formation of new 'lines 211u001eof sympathy' was mainly due to ethnic bonds, common enemies or economic needs. 211u001eHelen Jarlsvik's chapter on East Asia traces some effects of NATO enlargement on 211u001eRussian relations with China, but mainly on the declaratory level. Most policy 211u001echanges in the region are better explained by economic needs, pressure from the 211u001epolitical opposition and regional interests.
