In programming distributed object-oriented systems, there are several approaches211u001efor achieving binary interactions in a multiprocess environment. Usually these 211u001eapproaches take care only of synchronization or communication of two-party 211u001einteractions. In this paper the authors describe a way of desinging and 211u001eimplementing a more general concept: multiparty interactions. In a multiparty 211u001einteraction, several parties (objects or processes) somehow 'come together' to 211u001eproduce an intermediate and temporary combined state, use this state to execute 211u001esome activity, and then leave this interaction and continue their normal 211u001eexecution. In this paper, the authors propose a general scheme for constructing 211u001edependable multiparty interactions in a distributed object-oriented system, and 211u001edescribe its implementation in Java. In particular, the authors extend the notion 211u001eof multiparty interaction to include facilities for handling exceptions.
