Diabetes Mellitus (Type II) in American Indian/Alaska Native Elders: Cultural Aspects of Care.

As noted, this series addresses some of the most prevalent and impairing of illnesses, physical as well as mental, among older adults in general, and Native elders, specifically. The disease/disorders considered include diabetes, depression, cancer, and alcohol abuse/dependence. Each module, while focusing on a given health problem, emphasizes the social and cultural contexts that are inextricably linked to its cause, epidemiology, assessment, treatment, and prevention. As much as possible, case-oriented materials is presented to ground the discussion in the Native elder life experience. The reader will find as well as conscious attempt to incorporate perspectives and information drawn from medicine, nursing, pharmacology, psychiatry/psychology, social work, nutrition, and medical anthropology.
