In the course of studies carried out under this contract, two satis¬factory methods for the determination of Vitamin A in packaged rations have been developed. One employs a single magnesia-celite column for partial isolation of the vitamin from a hexane extract of the unsaponifiable fraction of the food. Vitamin A is estimated on the basis of its blue color reaction with antimony trichloride. The second method is a refinement of the first in that the eluate from the magnesia column is further purified by re-chromatographing on weakened alumina after which the vitamin A content is determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometry.
