A STUDY OF THE FAR INFRARED PROPERTIES OF CRYSTALS

An exact solution has been obtained for scattering of plane electromagnetic waves of arbitrary polarization and arbitrary angle of incidence on an infinitely long metal strip. Previously, exact results have been report¬ed only for the special case of incidence in a plane normal to the axis of the strip. In this special case, the problem may be reduced to a two dimensional solution of the scalar Helmholtz equation. In the general case solution of the vector Helmholtz equation in three dimensions is required. The resulting Mathieu function expansions involve a para¬meter which in the special case depends only on the ratio of strip width to wavelength, whereas, in the case of arbitrary incidence, the parameter is a function of the angle between the incident propagation vector and the strip axis as well. Asymptotic expressions have been found for the far field solutions in cylindrical and spherical coordinate representation.
