The report is a summary of the work completed as part of the contract during the period August 1971to September 1973. The objectives of the contract were to study the feasibility of improved cable handling methods and to design a cable handling device for a continuous miner;to design and construct a cable reel control system to significantly reduce cable whip;and to design and fabricate prototype cable fault locators. The continuous miner cable handling device developed is a separate,independently powered tender. Cable whip was eliminated or reduced by studying a relatively large payout torque. Devices embodying fault locating techniques were developed. The demonstrated performance of the fault locating devices justified letting a one-year extension to result in fabrication 12sample kits each containing all types for extensive testing in mines.
