摘要

A series of materials was studied for their ability to adsorb and activate factors XII and XI,affect other phases of clotting, adsorb specific proteins out of plasma, and to become adhesive to platelets. Thus far, little correlation was found among these aspects of interaction. A fluorinated ethylcellulose, while adsorbing fibrinogen and factor XII (activating the latter),did not accelerate clotting, and platelets in whole blood did not adhere to it. A polymethyl glutamate did not adsorb fibrinogen, but did adsorb factor XII and activated it. It delayed clotting markedly and platelets did adhere to this surface. Carbon surfaces prepared in various ways appeared to adsorb fibrinogen out of plasma which then 'converted'it. Platelets in fibrinogen-free plasma adhered only to unconverted fibrinogen surfaces.
