Intensive Culture of Walleye ('Stizostedion vitreum vitreum')

An intensive rearing program was initiated at Lamar Fish Cultural Development Center in an attempt to eliminate some of the unreliability in the pond culture of walleye. Miniaturized salmonid-type indoor facilities were used to rear the fish. The fry were started on Artemia and subsequently converted to a formulated dry diet at 1.5 cm with just under 30% survival. At present, a larger live-food organism, such as Daphnia, appears to be an intermediate requirement by the walleye before they can be converted to the formulated dry diet.
