Marketing Quality Grain in Domestic and Foreign Markets: A Summary of NC-151 Activities

This report documents major research activities and findings of the NC-151 Regional Research Committee, with special reference to those related to corn quality. Broken corn and foreign material (BCFM) is a major quality problem. High-temperature drying creates stress cracks which lead to breakage during handling. The presence of BCFM is stored grain contributed to insect and mold problems which were found to be widespread in a recent USDA survey. Concern over the BCFM problem led to the development of a new breakage susceptibility tester. Breakage susceptibility of grain kernels can be reduced through plant breeding and improved drying methods.
