Phase Diagrams in Materials Science, and the Use of the Computer in Their Calculation

The use of the computer for the calculation of available thermodynamic data is discussed with particular reference to the F*A*C*T (Facility for the Analysis of Chemical Thermodynamics) system, an on-line scientific numeric data base located in Montreal, Canada. The calculation of the binary system nickel-titanium and of the ternary system iron-chromium-vanadium are explained. Some views are expressed concerning the usefulness of the method.
