National Medical Care Expenditure Survey Health Insurance/Employer Survey Data: Person Record EBCDIC Files. Public Use Tape Documentation

The data in these files were obtained as part of the Health Insurance/Employer Survey (HIES), a substudy of the 1977 National Medical Care Expenditure Survey (NMCES). HIES data were collected from employers and insurance companies of persons who signed permission forms among the 40,320 person NMCES sample, which represents the U.S. civilian, noninstitutionalized population. The tape contains two Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code (EBCDIC) data files of one record per person. The first file contains data on health insurance status, premiums, and sources of payment for all persons in the sample; and the second file contains health insurance benefit provisions for privately insured sample members under 65 years of age. Files containing documentation and codebooks for the data sets are also on the tape. The data files on this tape have the capacity to link to each other and to the NMCES person-level household data file (NTIS No. PB83-199539). The documentation for these files contains a description of NMCES and HIES; information on sample design, construction of population weights, and methods of variance estimation; information on imputation of missing data and related procedures; description of file structure and content; and technical notes. These data are also available as Statistical Analysis System (SAS) files.
