The development of programming languages suitable for expressing parallel algorithms is an important research topic. The paper describes the parallel language Booster which has been engineered according to a number of design criteria. These design criteria are considered crucial in view of the pace of development in software design for parallel machines. A number of criteria emerge from the software engineering discipline, other criteria arise from the chosen model of computation of the class of target parallel architectures. It is shown that by taking design constraints seriously, limitations on the use of certain computation paradigms are unavoidable, but at the same time an efficient high level language can still be designed. Booster is a language designed for expressing parallel algorithms in the field of technical and scientific applications.
