On the Optical, Epr, and Maser Properties of Heat Treated Iron and Chromium Doped Rutile

Information on how heat treatment influences various physical properties of iron- and chromium-doped rutile is presented. The spacegroup of rutile is D4h. Hence, it has one main four-fold symmetry axis (the c-axis) and perpendicular to the c-axis four two-fold symmetry axes (positive and negative a-axes) and a reflection plane. Each titanium ion is surrounded by six oxygen ions, forming a distorted octahedron. Octahedra surrounding Ti(4+) ions lying in succeeding planes are identical except for a rotation of 90 deg around the c-axis. Thus, paramagnetic ions substituting for Ti(4+) ions occupy two magnetically nonequivalent sites (PI and PII). Ions in sites with the same symmetry as PI and PII as belonging to the magnetic complexes I and II, respectively, are discussed. (Author)
