A mathematical model of a torque motor and its control circuitry was developed for inclusion in a multiplex, fly-by-wire actuation system. The performance of this system is compared with a similar system which uses an electrohydraulic servo valve, using frequency and transient responses. The simulation indicates the performance of the torque motor model is slightly inferior at higher frequencies, giving marginally lower gain and increased phase lag. Satisfactory performance is achieved over the working range of the actuator. The study highlights the sensitivity of the system to limits imposed on the valve displacement and maximum motor voltage. The viscous damping present within the main valve is also found to be very important.
