NAVEX Experiment in the Spacelab D1 Mission: Planning and Execution

The conception and the arrangement of the navigation experiment NAVEX, as well as the preparations and operations during the German Spacelab mission D1 are described. The main purpose of NAVEX was the realization and testing of techniques for the functions of future satellites and ground stations in navigation and timing systems using precise frequency standards. Mathematical descriptions of the experiments are explained. The data acquisition and processing systems are outlined. Results show that the techniques are successful, and that the measuring methods are well suited for timing systems.
