Methods for Psychoacoustic Evaluation of Speech Communication Systems

A review is presented of research conducted in the development and evaluation of a 'Modified Rhyme Test' for the measurement of the intelligibility of speech transmitted over communication systems. This new multiplechoice intelligibility test is suitable for both laboratory and field use. Statistics concerning reliability and sensitivity of the test as a function of the number of listeners and the number of test repetitions are presented. The results of a series of experiments concerned with some of the variables involved in the development of a speaker identification test for the evaluation of speech communication systems are described in detail.
