In the field of sounding rocketry the necessity for a more sophisticated digital roll stabilized gyro platform with outputs compatible with PCM logic became apparent around 1969. Plans to initiate research and development of such a device were undertaken by AFCRL. Initial research and development resulted in the use of frictionless optical pick-offs and associated electronics to sense and convert the gyroscopic roll,pitch and yaw position data into digital binary information that could be used for either direct telemetry for attitude information of a sounding rocket payload or by feeding into electronic logic circuitry which in turn would initiate command signals to position the sounding rocket in space as required by the mission objective. The development also resulted in design of a servoed roll gimbal which isolated the gyros from vehicle spin. (Modified author abstract)
