The Effect of Different Question Types on Retention in Audiovisual Materials

This study tested whether postadjunctive questions facilitate learning in selected audiovisual materials and whether the type of question affects retention. The study was conducted in two phases. Phase I was designed to collect empirical data on the extent of question usage in audiovisual lessons purchased by the U.S. Army. From the review of 218 lessons, there were obvious differences in the design strategy of each lesson producer as measured by the presence of review questions, preadjunctive and postadjunctive questions, practice exercises and self-evaluation items. Phase II was designed to measure changes on a posttest attributable to the insertion of different types of post-adjunctive questions inserted into an audiovisual lesson in an 8 mm filmstrip. The sample consisted of 345 soldiers attending Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups.
