The Inhibitory Effects of Some Cinnamylphenols on the Marine Fungi 'Dendryphiella salina' and 'Corollospora maritima

Nineteen cinnamylphenols were evaluated for fungicidal worth against the marine fungi 'Dendryphiella salina' and 'Corollospora maritima'. 2-Cinnamyl-4-nonylphenol and 2-phenyl-4-cinnamylphenol were completely ineffective against 'Dendryphiella'; the remaining cinnamylphenols inhibited both fungi to varying degrees. 4-Cinnamylphenol, 4-(3-phenylpropyl)phenol, 2-cinnamyl-4,5-methelene-dioxyphenol, and 2-cinnamyl-4-methylphenol effectively inhibited both fungi, the criterion for effective inhibition being defined as 50% at 32 ppm; 2-cinnamyl-4-methylphenol and 2-cinnamyl-4-nonylphenol met this criterion against 'Corollospora'. 'Corollospora' was more sensitive to the cinnamylphenols than 'Dendryphiella' at equivalent concentrations. There was some relationship between chemical structure and the biological activity of these compounds. (Author)
