The polymeric anion formed by the deprotonation of poly(methylphenyl phosphazene) was used to initiate the anionic polymerization of styrene to form new polyphosphazene-graft-polystyrene copolymers with compositions ranging from 65 to 90% polystyrene. These new materials were characterized by elemental analyses, 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy, dilute solution techniques (size exclusive chromatography, membrane osmometry, and viscosity), and thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis).
