This research examined the extent to whichparenthood and college education are incorporated into theself-concept of college students. A US sample of under-graduates (90 men, 87 women) attending a large andethnically diverse university completed explicit and implicitmeasures of identification with "parenthood" and "collegeeducation," associations between these concepts and gendercategories, and gender identification. Explicitly, men andwomen identified strongly with college education. Implicitly,women identified equally with parenthood and collegeeducation, whereas men identified more strongly with collegeeducation. In addition, implicit measures revealed thattraditional gender roles accounted for a stronger identificationwith parenthood for participants who displayed a femaleidentity and a stronger identification with college educationfor participants who displayed a male identity.
