Polarization curves, obtained on the P-5827 potentiostat, have identified some details of the mechanism of the interaction of gold with the aqueous solutions of chlorine, bromine, and iodine in the presence of their anions. Electrochemical investigations have made it possible to study individually the reactions of the cathode reduction of chlorine, bromine, and iodine and the anodic dissolution of gold in the solutions containing the halogen ions and have made it possible to identify the stages that control the processes in general that take place without the imposition of an external EMF.The anode and cathode potentiostatic curves for the iodine and potassium iodide solutions are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The cathode polarization curves of the reduction of iodine indicate concentrational polarization of the electrode. The limiting cathode current depends linearly on the iodine concentration and is due to the exceptional slowness of the diffusion of iodine to the surface of the gold electrode.
